Right now, the government is finalising the Federal Budget—and deciding whether to keep giving away billions in investor tax breaks (like the capital gains tax discount) or choose a better path.
Today, MPs are in Canberra for the last time before the Budget. We know they’re hearing from the property lobby, and we want them to be hearing from renters too.
Right now, the housing system isn’t built for renters.
The CGT discount and negative gearing—tax breaks for landlords—reward people for property and making profits, not for providing stable, good quality homes.
But renters are left with:
unaffordable rents
moving every year or two
poor quality homes
When landlords are stretched or chasing capital gains, renters feel it first.
A fairer housing system for renters could deliver:
longer, more secure tenancies
better maintained homes
a system that values stable housing over quick profits
And instead of billions going to people who already own bonus homes, that money could go to new public housing or genuinely affordable rentals.
We often hear about first home buyers competing with investors—which you probably know all about if you’re a renter unable to afford to buy your first home.
Renters are impacted in other ways, every single day: These tax settings influence:
how often you have to find a new rental home
whether your home is maintained
whether you can afford your rent
And right now, renters are too often left out of the policy conversation.
If we don’t speak up, the property lobby will keep speaking on behalf of renters while seeking to keep things exactly as they are—and we all know this isn’t working for renters.
Let's take action together and make sure they hear from renters today.
